Here’s block #12 in the Controlled Chaos Quilt!
What You’ll Need
- 64 two-inch squares in color A (shown in red)
- 36 two-inch squares in color B (shown in yellow)
Instructions
Use 1/4″ seam allowances for all sewing.
Press all the seams. I’m pressing mine open for this quilt. I think it will make things simpler in the end.
Arrange your squares according to the diagram below.
For this block I sewed things up in chunks in order to keep the edges of each color perfectly straight, even if my seams weren’t lined up perfectly.
We’re going to sew the whole thing into three fat columns, but we’re going to sew some parts of those columns into chunks first.
1. Sew up four yellow 3×3 squares.
2. Sew up two red 3×4 rectangles and one red 4×10 rectangle.
Arrange those chunks as you see below.
Now sew all those chunks into columns.
Finally – sew those three columns into one fabulous block. 🙂

Wendy, I have been following along your Controlled Chaos stash-buster blocks project, and I just love it. You are truly a creative artist. But please tell me you will sash each block with solid black (or white), so that each and every block will really “pop”, and you will end up with a stellar work of fiber art. (Then the chaos of a thousand squares will truly be “controlled”… AND adorable!)

I haven’t decided yet – and I probably won’t decide until I get all the blocks done. I actually really like the way the blocks blend together, but I know that matching all those seams for the final assembly will be NOT FUN AT ALL – and I’m all about making my quilting as fun as possible. I’ve tried a mock-up with slate grey sashing that I really like, and I’ll definitely be posting about the decision when I get to that point. 🙂
Should this read two 3×4 red not four? I made four and don’t see where the other two go. Am I missing something?
Yes! I’m so sorry about that – I think when I started writing it I planned to have the four blocks around the sides and a separate block of squares in the center. I realized it was easier to just construct that one big red rectangle down the middle and I forgot to change it! Thanks for catching the error.

I’m really enjoying making this. I’ve made 11 blocks so far. I absolutely love all the colour combinations. I chose your pattern because I wanted to use my stash and scraps and it’s perfect for that! Because it’s so unrestricted and free from precise colours/ fabric it’s very relaxing and therapeutic to do. Thank you!
