How to Attach a Folded Ear to Amigurumi - a tutorial from FreshStitches and Shiny Happy World

Hooray! It’s another ‘Tip Tuesday’! Today, I’m going to talk about how to attach a folded ear when making amigurumi.

A folded ear is a great technique… it looks complicated, but it’s all about the attaching. You’ll see this ear on Roosevelt the Monster and Jackie the cow.

Okay, let’s assume that you’ve crocheted the ear as instructed. The attaching instructions say:

Attach ears. To do so, flatten ears along opening, and fold in half.

To flatten the ears, just squish the ear flat (you can read this blog post for more details), as pictured.

Now, fold the ear in half along the last round crocheted.

To attach, thread the tail through a tapestry needle, and run the needle through all four stitches that line up.

Now, just as you would attach any other piece, run the tapestry needle through one stitch on your main piece.

Repeat until all stitches on the ear have been used up, and you’re done!

Of course, this isn’t the only way to do it! Cynthia Sickler (from Demonstrative Bears) crochets the sides of the folded piece together, first. This means there are less stitches to fuss about when attaching (genius!). You can also stitch the sides of the ear together first, then attach.

As long as your amigurumi turns out cute… it doesn’t matter! I just wanted to show you how I do it, in case it helps a couple of folks out there. Hope this tip has been helpful, and come back next week for another one!

Thank you so much! I found you through Ravelry as I stumbled around in utter confusion over this ear. I am also making Jackie the cow and I have never done an ear like this before, and your post really helped me out!
